Theatre & Performance Lab

Theatrical experimentation, actor training and creative dialogue between performance and directing.

Origins and research background

The Theatre & Performance Lab is the association’s founding space for field-based creation and applied research. Its academic roots lie in the graduation project and research undertaken by إدريس سلمان عفيفي for the professional bachelor’s degree in Arts and Media — Theatre Professions and Performance Arts at the Faculty of Languages, Letters and Arts, Ibn Tofail University in Kenitra, supervised by Dr هشام بلهاشمي and Dr يوسف أمفزاع during the 2021–2022 academic year.

Vision and working method

The lab develops its own working methods around the actor and the development of performance skills. It prioritises a living exchange between acting and directorial vision: directing is not a top-down instruction, and acting is not mere execution. Together they form a shared creative process in which the actor–director relationship is reshaped through rehearsal and experimentation, opening expressive possibilities beyond established conventions.

Fields of practice and activities

  • Training and performance arts: courses and workshops in contemporary playwriting, directing, actor training, movement, physical expression and dance.
  • Theatre and performance production: work for adults and children that engages with street art, public squares and alternative spaces, bringing contemporary theatre into dialogue with Malhun poetry, storytelling and popular performance traditions.
  • Artistic and experimental residencies: supporting artists in shaping the actor’s artistic identity, developing performance abilities and building collaborative experimental theatre projects.
